Marriage as Fairy Tale

Thinking about my marriage and its demise this question was asked:

If you could describe your marriage as a fairy tale which one would it be?

The Selkie Girl

A tale of the loss of a woman’s soul/skin.

Words from a beautiful version of the story by Susan Cooper make the bodice of the gown. Entwined in the skirt are ribbons from a pointe shoe, seven tiny shells from the coast of Ireland, a miniature book of fairy tales, rose petals, a snippet of sheet music I played as a child, the words runningrunningrunning, and something a very old woman once whispered to me:

“Be careful….men will use you.”

The beginning ….. Diaster.  Catastrophe.  Wildfire.  Everything turned to ash.  Except some small black and white photos in a box I managed to save.  Why these?

An idea came to “honor” them….turn them into small pieces of art.  The first began with hand tinting.  Then a canvas.  A piece of fabric.  A brass pin.  A feather.

Scary to begin.  Self consciousness to be lost.  But then what more could there be to lose?
